Teaching Jesus’ Mission Early On
Hello church! My name is Kendall Feenstra and I am the Interim Director of Elementary School Ministries while Amy Vetter is on her maternity leave. This spring, I graduated from Briercrest College with a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministry; studying children and family ministries. Two weeks later, I started my position here at the church. It has been a bit surreal: having a job in my field right after graduation at the church I grew up in no less. It is so exciting to be working at the place where I experienced the beginning of my personal faith journey. I hold deep roots in this church family and am grateful for the opportunity to give back what was so graciously given to me as I was growing up here. My husband, Colin, and I were even married here at E-Free last August. I’m so thankful I get to use the gifts and education the Lord has equipped me with to develop the young people in our church into committed and active disciples of Jesus Christ.
Stepping into a new role in the Elementary School Ministries, it was exciting for me to see how the Kids Zone is working to have missional impact beyond our walls. One of the things I am particularly excited about is a thing we call “Bible Bucks,” which the kids get when they answer questions during large and small group time on Sunday mornings. What makes the Bible Bucks so special is that they do not go towards anything that the kids themselves actually get, but they are collected and then used to “purchase” items that will be donated to various organizations. Last year, one of the Bible Bucks projects was filling boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and this June we are stuffing socks with basic-needs items that will be donated to Streets Alive in Lethbridge. We chose Streets Alive because it is a great way to teach the kids that there aren’t just people in need far away but right here in our city, and there is something we can do about it.
For these last several weeks, we have been learning about the miracles of Jesus, and that His mighty saving works are both spiritual and physical. The Bible Bucks are a really tangible way for the kids to see that they can help meet the needs of others; it’s part of continuing the work of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. The children of E-Free are being moved to action and it is an incredible thing to be a part of!
I’d love to invite you to be a part of this lesson that our kids are learning. We’re inviting you to multiply the work they are doing by donating: new adult socks, granola bards, toothbrushes and travel size items (shampoo/conditioner, soap, deodorant and toothpaste). Donation boxes are located at the Kids Zone Desk and Info Centre.Tags: bible bucks, elementary school ministries, Jesus, kendall feenstra, kids zone, mission, streets alive
