CloseThis talk will examine the text of Genesis 22, where Abraham is commanded to sacrifice his son Isaac. Is this a horrific, immoral command, or can we place it into an understandable context of a good God whose harsh command is surrounded by miraculous signs and expressions of divine reassurance? This lecture will also address the nature of divine commands in light of criticisms made by atheists—that God’s commands are arbitrary and that theoretically God could have commanded the very opposite of, say, the Ten Commandments.
