This Christmas marks the eleventh year we have been a part of the Advent Conspiracy! By participating in the Advent Conspiracy, we aim to SPEND LESS by resisting the cultural pressure to celebrate Christmas through over-spending and over-consumption. Instead, we GIVE MORE! That is, we give relational, thoughtful, and meaningful gifts. We then take the money we saved and LOVE ALL by giving to those in true need. In all of this, we strive to WORSHIP FULLY by keeping our focus on Jesus and participating with Him in what He came to do, bringing hope to a desperate world.
This year, instead of choosing one project to pursue as a church family, we are inviting you to explore your passions, listen for guidance from the Holy Spirit, and invest a portion of your Christmas spending in the cause He lays on your heart. This could mean providing support for a neighbour you notice is struggling, responding directly to a need God opens your eyes to in our community, or giving to an organization that serves the poor and the marginalized.
‘TRULY I TELL YOU, WHATEVER YOU DID FOR ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE
BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF MINE, YOU DID FOR ME.’
– MATTHEW 25:40
TO JOIN THE ADVENT CONSPIRACY:
1) Prayerfully reconsider and re-direct some of your holiday spending to the cause that God lays on your heart. Need help finding a cause? Check out our past projects here or visit our missions pages for more ideas.
2) Give directly to the cause or organization of your choosing. The church cannot receive gifts designated Advent Conspiracy for 2018. Any gifts to the church designated “Advent Conspiracy” will be returned to you.
3) Fill out a paper ornament to hang on the Advent Conspiracy tree in the lobby, located beside the coffee bar. We want to know about the people and places you have chosen to support so that we can celebrate how our church family is making a difference this Christmas season.
We all want our Christmas to be a lot of things: full of joy, memories, happiness. Above all, we want it to be about Jesus. What we don’t want is stress. Or debt. Or feeling like we “missed the moment”. Advent Conspiracy is a movement designed to help us all slow down and experience a Christmas worth remembering.
WORSHIP FULLY Christmas marks the moment where God’s promise was fulfilled and love took form, tiny fingers and all. It is a moment that deserves our full attention and praise. We put Worship Fully as AC’s first tenet because we believe the level of our involvement at Christmas is based entirely on how much we are celebrating Christ’s birth. As disciples of Christ, our worship is demonstrated by our use of money.
SPEND LESS Spending less isn’t a call to stop giving gifts; it’s a call to stop spending money on gifts we won’t remember in less than a year, especially when much of it goes right onto a credit card. By spending wisely on gifts we free ourselves from the anxiety associated with debt so we can take in the season with a full heart.
GIVE MORE The most powerful, memorable gift you can give to someone else is yourself. And nobody modelled this more than Jesus. So what does this look like for you? Tickets to a ball game or the theater? A movie night? The main point is simple: when it comes to spending time with those you love, it’s all about quality, not quantity.
LOVE ALL It all boils down to love. Love from a Saviour. Love for the Saviour evidenced by love to a neighbour in need. By spending just a little less on gifts we free up our resources to love as Jesus loves by giving to those who really need help. As disciples of Christ we are His hands and feet showing His love to a broken world.
