I forgot it was Lent! In the midst of all the news about COVID-19 and the meetings to plan how we’re going to respond, Lent got lost. I got distracted and overwhelmed.

So I can relate to the children of Israel in Numbers 13-14. They’re getting close to the Promised Land so Moses sends out 12 men to explore the land. They’re gone for 40 days. When they come back, they report, “We went into the land which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit [a massive cluster of grapes, some figs, and pomegranates]. But they people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified” (Numbers 13:27-28).

The people are so overwhelmed by fear that they immediately start looking for someone to lead them back to Egypt. Only Joshua and Caleb remember the Lord’s promises: “The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them” (Numbers 14:9b).

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the information and speculation being circulated right now. It’s easy to get distracted by the latest numbers of infections. Let’s stay focused on God’s promises.

Take a moment and ask God: what is one promise you want to remind me of right now? Then share that promise in the comments.
